I feel blessed to have had three generations of my family living nearby in our little southern town of Hawthorne, Florida.

I have several fond memories of growing up, most of which revolve around my grandmothers.

When I was four years old, Granny B, my father’s mother, taught me my first Bible verse – “Psalm 56:3 What time I am afraid, I will trust in Thee.”

Before I could read, Grandma Wilkinson taught me hymns, which I still remember and cherish.

Ever since the first grade, my dream was to be a teacher. However, because of a reading disability and the fear of failure, I realized my dream through teaching children in Sunday School.

In 2016, I published my first Children’s chapter book, The Adventures of Thelma Thistle and Her Friends. I published in a different genre in 2020 –– Christian historical novels.

When Cory returns from his morning walk-about, he overhears an argument between Adam Mouse and Thelma. These two friends vehemently discuss that the days are getting shorter.  Trying to defuse the situation and restore tranquility to the ditch, Cory sets out to demonstrate the rotation and tilt of the earth, using Thelma as the sun and Bunny as the earth. Bunny holds a stick close to her chest, the stick representing the earth’s axis, and her nose representing where the friends live.   With Rudy Raccoon holding Bunny, Cory asks Rudy to stop at winter, spring, summer, and fall. Then he asks Adam and Beetle where is Bunny’s nose?   After the demonstration, Thelma had to admit that the days were getting shorter and apologized to Adam.   In the next chapter, the friends scamper off to collect fall leaves, and learn why the leaves change colors.

My name is Joyce Crawford. I am a "cradle Christian." I'm certain many of you know exactly what that means. My mother and daddy carried me to church as soon as the doctor gave his permission. That was the way it was in the 1940's.

In addition to my parents' nurturing and training, my grandparents, and my oldest and dearest aunt taught me Bible stories and Scripture. I remember so well the first Bible verse Granny B taught me when I was a Beginner in Sunday School - a 4-year-old: "What time I am afraid I will trust in Thee." Psalm 56:3

My teenage years also revolved around church. We grew up during the "hippie" years, and I, for one, was on a short leash. When our youth group announced we were planning a "love-in" in the weeks to come, the adults were shocked. We kept our secret well, and you should have heard the chatter among the adults.

On the appointed Sunday night, as the adult congregation waited for a normal worship service, we teenagers came in the front entrance so that the congregation's backs were to us. We all dressed in our best imitation of hippie clothes and carried the symbolic daisies. If you listen closely, you can still hear the collective and eternal gasps from a conservative Southern Baptist church.

As we danced down the isles (the best that Baptist can dance that is) we passed out our daisies one-by-one. As each anxious adult received a daisy, they heard the sweet words from us, their teenagers, "Jesus loves you, and so do I."

I am now retired, spending my time digging in my garden dirt, talking to worms, and listening to God share with me more ideas for children's stories.

I love teaching children, not only Bible stories, but everyday stories. There is so much on my heart to share with them. Some have never heard.
